Have you ever dreamed of holding an Italian passport? Beyond the pride of reconnecting with your roots, Italian citizenship opens doors across Europe and the world—freedom to live, work, and study in the EU, access to global business opportunities, and simplified travel. Now, for a limited time, former Italian citizens have a unique chance to reacquire their Italian citizenship under recent legislative changes.
Why Now?
Thanks to Law No. 74/2025, amending Law No. 91/1992, individuals who lost their Italian citizenship before August 16, 1992 may reclaim it between July 1, 2025, and December 31, 2027. This is a rare, time-bound window that could close soon—missing it could mean waiting years for another chance.
Who Can Reacquire Citizenship?
Two main pathways exist depending on your circumstances:
1) Reacquisition under Article 17, Paragraph 1
This applies if you:
Were born in Italy, or
Lived in Italy for at least two consecutive years, and
Lost Italian citizenship before August 16, 1992, either voluntarily or involuntarily.
Examples include:
Voluntarily acquiring foreign citizenship before 1992 and moving abroad.
Losing citizenship as a minor due to a parent’s naturalization.
The procedure requires a declaration submitted to your Consulate, along with documentation proving prior Italian citizenship, residence, and identity. Once approved, your citizenship takes effect the day after your declaration.
Important: Children residing abroad no longer automatically gain citizenship through a parent—they must meet residency requirements.
2) Reacquisition under Article 13, Paragraph 1, Letter c
This pathway is available if you automatically lost Italian citizenship by becoming a citizen of another country before August 16, 1992. You can reacquire Italian citizenship by:
Submitting a formal declaration of intent, then moving to Italy to establish permanent residence within 12 months, or
Establishing one year of permanent residence in Italy, without submitting a declaration.
Both routes allow you to reclaim your Italian citizenship without giving up your other nationality.
EMIT law will guide you step by step—ensuring your application is complete and avoiding delays with the Consulate.
Time Is Crucial
Remember, this opportunity is only available until December 31, 2027. Reacquiring your Italian citizenship can unlock a world of opportunities—for you and future generations. Don’t miss this chance to reconnect with your heritage and embrace the benefits of Italian nationality.
