Italy Elective Residence Visa (Visto Residenza Elettiva)

The Italy Elective Residence Visa is an Italian visa program that allows individuals to live permanently in Italy without working, provided they can financially support themselves autonomously. It is suitable for retired individuals, and people with high self-sustaining incomes and financial assets. One of the primary requirements is that the applicant cannot support themselves while residing in Italy through any type of employment. It should be noted, that the threshold may vary at the discretion of the immigration authorities.

 

Main Requirements for Obtaining an Italy Elective Residence Visa

 

  • ​​Demonstrate documented evidence of sufficient financial resources. For a single person a passive income of at least €31,000 (or equivalent home currency amount). For a married couple, it is €38,000. The amount increases by 5% for every dependent child who comes with you. 

  • Prove that you can sustain yourself in ways other than job earnings (e.g., pensions, annuities, property income, income from joint stock or investment in a company, etc.). 

  • Provide adequate and documented assurances about the availability of a house to be chosen as residence in Italy, along with ample self-sufficient, stable, and consistent economic resources that may be fairly assumed to continue in the future.

 

Procedure for Italy Elective Residence Visa and Permit

 

  • Book an appointment with the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your home country to deliver the necessary documents.

  • Pay the Italian visa fee (about €116) and wait for them to process your visa. If approved, you will receive a visa to enter Italy.

  • Within 8 days of arrival in Italy,  you must apply for a stay permit for elective residence purposes.
